TEACHING SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL IN SCIENCE 5 FOR TAGUDIN DISTRICT

Abstract: In order to stay up with the rapidly changing global environment, many nations are improving their Science curricula. However, the lack of educational tools at the school is a widespread issue for teachers. This descriptive-developmental research was utilized to develop a Teaching Supplemental Material in Science 5 for Tagudin District for school year 2019-2020. Moreover, the study involved 760 Grade 5 learners in Tagudin District, SY 2019-2020 utilizing a questionnaire to find their level of performance and their strengths and weaknesses in Science. Further, the data collected were analysed using mean and rank. Significant findings revealed that the level of performance of the grade 5 learners in Science 5 is very satisfactory. In addition, a great number of topics were not mastered by the students. Correspondingly, there is a need for additional instructional materials to be used in teaching the subject.

FINANCIAL PRIORITIZATION OF PUBLIC JUNIOR HIGH SHOOL TEACHERS

Abstract: Teachers, who are significant contributors to society\'s development, have a better personal finance plan when they have good financial knowledge. Unfortunately, many teachers are unable to handle their own finances (Surendar & Sarma, 2018). This descriptive -correlational research assessed the extent of financial prioritization of public junior high school teachers in the Schools Division of Ilocos Sur. It involved 39 public junior high school teachers in Tagudin District, SY 2019– 2020 utilizing a questionnaire to find the extent of their financial prioritization. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count and percentage distribution, mean, and Pearson r. Significant findings revealed that most of the teachers were 20-29 years old male married teachers in Teacher I position. Majority of the respondents’ source of income is from their salary with a net take home pay ranging from PhP 8,000.00 to PhP 12,999.00. Additionally, the respondents considered medical, education, transportation, and miscellaneous as high priority. On the other hand, housing, food, savings, purchase of investments, insurance, and paying of debts were considered as moderate priority while low priority was given to entertainment and leisure, and clothing. The profile of the respondents and the level of extent of financial prioritization have positive weak correlation. Further, there is a significant relationship between the respondent’s position and its extent of financial prioritization as reflected by the test of significance value of 0.03. As a result, the findings emphasized the necessity for a financial literacy program to assist instructors in improving their financial literacy.

CHALLENGES IN INTEGRATING INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Abstract: The educational systems worldwide are continuously adopting means on how to make teaching be more interesting and for learning to be meaningful to learners. However, teachers experience many encounters and these change the way they teach their lessons. This study explored the challenges in integrating Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in teaching Mathematics in the secondary schools of the Schools Division of Ilocos Sur for the School Year 2018 – 2019. It utilized the descriptive - correlational design employing questionnaire as data collection tool. Said instrument was administered to 71 respondents. Consequently, frequency count and percentage distribution, mean, standard deviation, multiple linear correlation and t-test were used for data analysis. It found out that the respondents have low level usage of computer, internet and ICT but with high-level of confidence and opinion on using ICT. Additionally, the level of confidence in integrating ICT is significantly related to the socio-demographic and teaching-related factors of the respondents. It is, therefore, recommended that teachers should attend trainings on ICT integration in teaching and other related courses, be provided with ICT equipment/gadgets, teach only Mathematics subject and have their number of teaching hours per day lessened, and be encouraged to use online teaching or learning media forms more often.

IMPROVING PRONUNCIATION AND INTONATION SKILLS OF GRADE 5 PUPILS THROUGH READING TONGUE TWISTERS

Abstract: This research measured the pronunciation and intonation skills of the Grade 5 pupils of Cabaroan Elementary School, Cervantes District during the School Year 2019-2020 and evaluated the use of tongue twisters to improve these said skills. The researcher used the quasi-experimental design where thirty Grade 5 pupils attended as the subjects of the study. Further, it used teacher-made test to gather the requisite data. Moreover, the Rubrics for Pronunciation (Published by the International Literacy Association and Wiley) activity especially in tongue twisters. Furthermore, the study used mean and t-test to treat the gathered data. There was a satisfactory level of performance in pronunciation and intonation of the respondents during the two groups who have undergone the preliminary evaluation as evidenced by the mean value of 18.00. Consequently, the respondents had a satisfactory level of performance as shown by 23.87 mean value in the two groups who have undergone the post test. It could be prominent that the given mean values contrast wherein the mean value of the post test is higher than the two groups who have undergone pretest. The mean totals (5.87) of the respondents in the two groups who have undergone pretest and in the two groups who have undergone post test had a significant difference which rejected the null hypothesis. The findings highlighted the use of tongue twisters to improve the pronunciation and intonation of the pupils. Finally, to recommend, English teachers may use tongue twisters to help improve the pronunciation and intonation skills of their learners and language teachers may adopt the use of tongue twisters in teaching the mother-tongue and Filipino language as a strategy to improve their pronunciation and intonation skills.

USE OF INTERACTIVE CROSSWORD PUZZLE IN IMPROVING THE VOCABULARY SKILLS OF GRADE IV LEARNERS

Abstract: Vocabulary skill is a significant ability and asset one should possess for if one is weak in vocabulary, this limits him in understanding articles. It is the task of the teacher to motivate the learners gain increased and enough vocabulary for self-expression and a means of achieving communicative competence and other skills (Aquino, 2015). The study assessed the use of interactive crossword puzzle in improving the vocabulary skills of Grade IV learners of Suyo Central School, Suyo District, Schools Division of Ilocos Sur for the School Year 2019-2020. The Quasi-Experimental research design elucidated the study, which involved a total enumeration of 15. Further, it used researcher-made test as data-gathering instrument. Frequency, percentage, mean and t-test quantified the results for data analysis. During the pretest, the level of vocabulary skills of the respondents was “fair” wherein 66.67 percent of them got 21-40 scores. Consequently, the respondents’ level of vocabulary skill became “very satisfactory” in the posttest when 60 percent of them got 61-80 scores. There was a significant difference between the vocabulary skills of learners before and after their exposure to the intervention evidenced by 41.77 t-value. The findings emphasized that language teachers should use interactive crossword puzzle to improve the vocabulary skills of learners. In addition, other language teachers in other grade levels may use interactive crossword puzzle using the same procedure. Finally, teachers in other disciplines may use interactive crossword puzzle to improve memory retention, creativity and other skills of their learners.

COMPARATIVE EFFECTS IN THE USE OF PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING AND DISCUSSION METHOD IN IMPROVING THE UNDERSTANDING OF STUDENTS ON ATOMIC STRUCTURE

Abstract: This study compared the impact of problem-based learning and discussion on improving the atomic structure understanding of Narvacan National Central High School Grade 8 students. Conversely, this study included 28 Grade 8 Euclid students as a control group exposed to the discussion method and 48 Grade 8 Sampaguita students as an experimental group exposed to problem-based learning. The researcher used purposive sampling to select the respondents and used the adapted questionnaire from science for 21st Century Learners to assess the students during the pre-test and the post-test. The findings were statistically analyzed using a t-test to determine the significant difference between the students\' pretest and post-test mean scores on atomic structure and gain ratio, which describes the students\' effort to improve their scores into perfect scores. Consequently, the study found that before the invention, students lacked an understanding of atomic structure. However, after utilizing the invention, it became clear that traditional and problem-based learning differ significantly in teaching atomic structure. This means that problem-based learning increased students\' atomic structure performance. Hence, the findings imply that Problem-based Learning may be utilized effectively in teaching science and other subjects. The study\'s findings suggested that teachers make science more interesting, engaging, and exciting for their students. Moreover, more research is required to identify interesting and relevant scientific education programs that might improve students’ academic performance.

MANIPULATIVE ELECTRON DISTRIBUTION MAP: IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SHS-STEM STUDENTS IN ELECTRONCONFIGURATION

Abstract: Electron configuration of atom is the depiction of the arrangement of electrons distributed among the orbital shells and sub shells. Manipulative electron Distribution Map is best applied to motor learning and requires dexterous management, or control of activities by means of cognition. The diagnostic assessment in General Chemistry I for SHS revealed that the lesson on Electron Configuration is difficult and/or the least mastered by the students, prompting the researchers to seek out new ways to help those who are falling behind in class. The two (2) sections of Grade 11 STEM at Sinait National High School, each with 35 students, were involved in this. The study was conducted using a Quasi-Experimental research design, with the mean and t-test for uncorrelated samples as statistical tools. As a result, Group A (x=6.90) has a higher gain in score with a descriptive rating of “Very Satisfactory” that is higher than Group B with a descriptive rating of “Satisfactory”. Thus, the researchers suggest that, teachers should employ manipulatives extensively in class management. When a kid has something to control, he or she is rarely in trouble.

WORK ETHICS AND PERFORMANCE OF PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS

Abstract: In the Philippines, teachers are considered the backbones of the country because they provide strength and inspiration to all professionals. On the other hand, teachers have great potential to influence students’ educational outcome. They need to be appropriate representations to manifest a noble personality worthy of emulation by learners. They have great potential to influence students’ educational outcome. The descriptive-correlation study determined the relationship between the extent of work ethics and level of performance of teachers in public elementary/secondary with integrated schools of Tagudin District, Schools Division of Ilocos Sur for the school year 2019-2020. It involved public school teachers who had at least five years of experience, utilizing a questionnaire adopted from the Code of Professional Conduct for Teachers by Griofa & Ruairc (2014). Findings showed that the respondents rated their work ethics to a “Very Great Extent.” Most of the respondents have also performed “Outstanding,” in terms of their Individual Performance Commitment Review Form (IPCRF) ratings. In addition, it was found out that there is a significant relationship between the position, education and teaching experience of the respondents to their work ethics. From the findings, the study recommends the adoption/use of the long-term work ethics program that would improve the ethico-moral responsibilities of the teachers and the improvement of the skills and competencies of teachers amidst the global pandemic caused by COVID-19 disease and it recommends that engagement with public-school teachers will be implemented that tackles their weakness in identified areas.

INVOLVEMENT OF STAKEHOLDERS TO THE PERFORMANCE OF PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN SCHOOLS DIVISION OF ILOCOS SUR

Abstract: Basic education is intended to meet basic learning needs which provides the foundation on which subsequent learning can be based. The study is to determine the relationship of the extent of involvement of various stakeholders and the performance of public elementary schools in the Schools Division of Ilocos Sur. The researcher used complete enumeration of all qualified school heads of public elementary schools in SDO Ilocos Sur. The research used a questionnaire to gather the data on the extent of the contribution of various stakeholders in the management and operations of public elementary school in SDO Ilocos Sur. Significant results of the study revealed that the parents, alumni, non-government organizations and local government office contributes to the great extent in the management and operations of the public schools in SDO Ilocos Sur. Furthermore, the NAT results are interpreted as average, the enrollment rate is considerably high, the drop-out rate is very low, and the graduation rate is at its very high level. Furthermore, there is a significant relationship between the participation of parents to the enrollment rate and graduation rate of the learners. The study recommends that the public schools through the school heads will collaboratively engage with the members of the community to improve the NAT results, graduation and enrollment rate and reduce the drop-out rates, and to improve the communication between the school and the community to make them part of the school operations to increase the learning outcomes and achievements of the school.

SCHOOL-BASED INITIATIVES IN REDUCING BULLYING CASES IN PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Abstract: School bullying is a serious problem that impacts all students, bullies, victims, and witnesses. The purpose of the study is to determine the relationship between the status of bullying and the extent of implementation of School-Based Initiatives in reducing bullying cases of complete elementary school in Cervantes District, Schools Division of Ilocos Sur for the School Year 2019-2020. A researcher-questionnaire was used to gather data and had a validity score of 4.67 and a Cronbach\'s alpha index of.89. In the study, it involved 39 teachers and 50 students from 14 public elementary schools in Cervantes District. The data were analyzed and interpreted using frequency, percentage and mean. Moreover, the Pearson correlation was employed to determine the relationship between the variables of the study. Significant findings of the study revealed that bullying was seldom observed verbally (1.74), physically (1.68), online (1.09), or relationally (1.50). Moreover, school-based anti-bullying programs were implemented. Moreover, there is a moderate relationship between bullying status and school-based efforts to reduce bullying. In addition, school leaders and parents are pleased with the intervention. Stopping bullying by educating coworkers, bystanders, and students is important method to address the issue. It is recommended that school safety committee includes parents in school planning are some anti-bullying initiatives that must be implemented. Finally, parents may help prevent bullying by caring for their children, promoting good conduct, and correcting negative attitudes.
