Abstract:
Vocabulary skill is a significant ability and asset one should possess for if one is weak in vocabulary, this limits him in understanding articles. It is the task of the teacher to motivate the learners gain increased and enough vocabulary for self-expression and a means of achieving communicative competence and other skills (Aquino, 2015). The study assessed the use of interactive crossword puzzle in improving the vocabulary skills of Grade IV learners of Suyo Central School, Suyo District, Schools Division of Ilocos Sur for the School Year 2019-2020. The Quasi-Experimental research design elucidated the study, which involved a total enumeration of 15. Further, it used researcher-made test as data-gathering instrument. Frequency, percentage, mean and t-test quantified the results for data analysis. During the pretest, the level of vocabulary skills of the respondents was “fair” wherein 66.67 percent of them got 21-40 scores. Consequently, the respondents’ level of vocabulary skill became “very satisfactory” in the posttest when 60 percent of them got 61-80 scores. There was a significant difference between the vocabulary skills of learners before and after their exposure to the intervention evidenced by 41.77 t-value. The findings emphasized that language teachers should use interactive crossword puzzle to improve the vocabulary skills of learners. In addition, other language teachers in other grade levels may use interactive crossword puzzle using the same procedure. Finally, teachers in other disciplines may use interactive crossword puzzle to improve memory retention, creativity and other skills of their learners.
