Abstract:
This research assessed the pronunciation and intonation skills of the Grade V pupils of Cabaroan Elementary School, Cervantes District during the School Year 2019-2020 and evaluated the use of tongue twisters to improve these said skills. The researcher used the quasi-experimental design and the thirty Grade V pupils of Cabaroan Elementary School were used as the subjects of the study. A teacher-made test was utilized to gather the data. The Rubrics for Pronunciation activity especially in tongue twisters was used. Mean and t-test were used to treat the gathered data. It was found out that the level of performance of the respondents during the pre-test was satisfactory evidenced by 18.00 mean value while that of the posttest was 23.87 mean value categorized as satisfactory. There was a significant difference between the mean of the pretest and the mean of the posttest with 5.87 mean difference leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. It was concluded that the level of performance of the learners in pronunciation and intonation is not commendable and the use of tongue twisters to improve the pronunciation and intonation of the learners is imperative. It is highly recommended that English teachers should use tongue twisters to help improve the pronunciation and intonation of their learners. It is likewise recommended that the use of tongue twisters could be adopted by language teachers teaching the mother-tongue and Filipino language as a strategy to help hone their pronunciation and intonation skills.
