Abstract:
This study was undertaken to determine the general level of performance of the three sections of Grade IV pupils in Science Subject of the Cabugao South Central School and SPED Center during the Diagnostic Test of School Year 2018-2019. The teacher handling Science subject for the three sections of Grade IV of the Cabugao South Central School, Cabugao District noted that the pupils have lack of interest in learning the subject. He then conducted the diagnostic test inorder to determine the present level of performance of his pupils. His findings served as his guideposts in providing learning situations to learners for the whole school year.\r\n\r\nThe study used the raw scores obtained by the pupils in a 40-item teacher-made paper and pencil diagnostic test. The data gathered were statistically analyzed. The mean and percentage of mastery were computed using the raw scores gathered. The general level of performance of the pupils along the Science Subject was determined by identifying the frequency of scores obtained in each of the level of performance as follows: Excellent (scores obtained range from 36 to 40), Very Good (scores from 31 to 35), Good (24-30), Average (21-25), Needs Improvement (16-20) and Poor (scores 15 and below), Kirby (2001).\r\n\r\nBased from the data collected from the study, the following were reflected: 1).The mean obtained by each of the classes were: IV Fast learners- 28.46; IV Gold- 17.28 and IV Ruby- 17.83. The average mean of the three classes was 21.19; 2). The percentage of mastery of the Grade IV Fast Learners was 71.15 %, 43.19 % for Garde IV Gold and 44.57 for Grade IV Ruby. Their average percentage of mastery was 52.97 %. In summary, the general level of performance of the Grade IV pupils in Science Diagnostic Test during the School Year 2018-2019 was needs improvement. The results of the study revealed that there is a need for the Grade IV pupils to learn and master the majority of the different learning competencies enclosed in the Science Grade IV Curriculum. In addition, pupils cannot decode, understand and comprehend well the English as a medium of instruction in Science IV that made them landed in the needs improvement level. Lack of interest in learning the subject is also one of the reasons why the Grade IV pupils’ performance landed in the needs improvement level. It is further suggested then that Science teachers must be innovative in teaching the subject.\r\n\r\nAbove all the findings, it is recommended that appropriate teaching strategies and techniques such as Differentiated Instruction, using of learning modules, Technology-aided instruction, Strengthening of the SCI-FUN Program and Cooperative, exploratory activities must be extended to the pupils by the Science teacher inorder to increase their interest in learning the different learning competencies in Science IV; The Science teacher must provide great motivation, friendly and exciting learning atmosphere. Optimum performance should be extracted from the pupils. English as a medium of instruction in Science must be already introduced in Grade III so that pupils could already gain more confidence in using the medium in their Grade IV. Results of this study would be disseminated to other Science teachers through a LAC Session inorder to make appropriate actions to the mode of delivery of instructions on their respective Science classes. Less abled learners should be given special attention and possibly remedial instruction to cope up with the difficult Science learning competencies while more abled learners must continuously given higher order of activities to hone their potentials in Science. Studies on the performance of other Science IV Classes in the district should be undertaken for comparison. More researches should be conducted especially on factors affecting the level of performance of pupils. The factors to be studied may be home, school, environment or teacher related.
