Abstract:
Science is a core subject in the curriculum that teaches children necessary skills that they can use in other areas of their lives. This study determined the general level of performance of Grade IV pupils in science subject of the Cabugao South Central School and Special Education Center during the diagnostic test of School Year 2018-2019. The teacher handling Science IV conducted the said test to determine the present level of performance of the pupils. The raw scores of the pupils in a 40-item teacher-made paper and pencil with an average validity score of 4.67 from the three consulted experts were gathered and statistically analyzed. The mean and percentage of mastery were computed using the raw scores gathered. Furthermore, the frequency of scores obtained was used to identify the general performance of the pupils. The following descriptors were utilized: excellent (36 to 40), very good (31 to 35), good (24-30), average (21-25), needs improvement (16-20) and poor (15 and below) (Kirby, 2001).The results indicated that the general level of performance of Grade IV pupils may need improvement, hence there is a need for them to learn and master most of the learning competencies enclosed in the Science Grade IV Curriculum. Moreover, it is further suggested that Science teachers must be innovative in teaching the subject (Hussein, 2006). Relative to this, strengthening the SCI-FUN Program would be very beneficial in terms of creating a high level of motivation, a pleasant, interesting, and collaborative learning environment.
