Abstract:
Reading and constructing the meaning of a text critically is necessary in the era of fake news as people are now exposed to enormous amounts of information, often in digital form, which is not always accurate (Phonekeo et al., 2021). This study focuses on the four components of reading, which include noting details, inferring character traits, sequencing events, and seeing cause and effect, in the intermediate class who has a poor status in the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory It features 50 students from Caellayan Elementary School in the Schools Division of Ilocos Sur\'s intermediate level. The research adopted a reading comprehension test from Paet et al., (2015) and was revised by the researcher specifically on noting details, making inferences, sequencing events, and perceiving cause effect relationships. The pupil-participants reading comprehension skills who were exposed to the jigsaw reading technique were at the “Very Satisfactory” level and “Satisfactory” level when exposed to the traditional method. The research indicates that there is a significant difference between the reading comprehension skills of the intermediate class of Caellayan Elementary School before and after using the jigsaw reading technique. The findings emphasize the use of the jigsaw reading technique in classes more frequently to improve the status of the pupils in Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI), teachers should be encouraged to participate in and conduct these programs and activities in their respective schools.
