Abstract:
Due to the interrelated nature of the processes involved in reading and writing, storytelling is an effective pedagogical strategy that can be woven into instruction to increase pupil’s competencies. This study aimed to determine the influence of storytelling using Ilocano stories on the performance and communication ability of Grade I pupils in the selected central schools of the First District, Division of Ilocos Sur for the school year 2016-2017. A descriptive research design where questionnaires were adopted and grades of pupils from their Form 138-E were utilized. Twenty-two Grade I teachers and 489 Grade I pupils were involved. The level of pupil’s exposure to storytelling was assessed based on the storytelling assistance at home and in school. The performance of the pupils was based on their grades in the core subjects and their communication ability was assessed in terms of their receptive and expressive skills. The profiles or the pupil-related factors and the teacher-related factors were analyzed. The correlational method was used to find the significant relationship between pupil-related and teacher-related factors and the pupils’ level of exposure to storytelling. The findings signify that storytelling can be of influence on the performance of the pupils in the core subject areas. Thus, through storytelling, the teacher can initiate functional literacy among the pupils since basic education, especially Grade I focuses on the fundamentals.
