City of San Fernando – DepEd Regional Office I strengthens its research culture through coaching and mentoring. This is the initial step conducted by the Region to guide promising researchers and research enthusiasts in the different functional divisions and Schools Division Offices(SDOs).

A month-long activity on Coaching and Mentoring was conducted through MS Teams from August 31 to September 27. Led by the Policy, Planning and Research Division (PPRD) under the supervision of Dr. Cecilia Rosido, the conduct of the activity is brilliantly guided and closely monitored by the OIC-Assistant Regional Director, Ronald B. Castillo, chair of the Regional Research Committee.

The activity was participated by two Education Program Supervisors (EPS) from the different SDOs and select EPS in the regional office. Other SDO Senior Education Program Specialists for Planning and Research also attended in lieu of some EPS’ attendance to the activity.

The rest of the EPS from the different functional divisions of the regional office served as mentors/ coaches and at the same time resource persons who were assigned different topics. To wit, Dr. Liezl Mique (Assessing a Researchable Situation – Introduction and Rationale), Dr. Melisa del Prado(Developing Research Questions – Statement of the Problem), Dr. Oliver
Gutierrez (Setting the Scope and Limitation with Theoretical Framework), Dr. Ryan Bantiding (Literature Review), Dr. Juner Windel Valdez (Choosing the Appropriate Research Design), Dr. Edwina Manalang (Sampling, Data Instrumentation and Collection), and Dr. Leah Olua (Treatment of Qualitative Data, Application of Statistical Tools and Data Interpretation).

Plenary sessions were held half day every week and the rest of the week were allotted for writeshop, submission and giving of suggestions and recommendations by the assigned research mentors/ coaches.
A 10-minute presentation of output was done on the last day, followed by comments and suggestions from the mentors/ coaches.
It is expected that the outputs shall be refined and submitted to the Regional Office come next call for research proposals for possible funding under the Basic Education Research Fund (BERF).
